I readily admit that I haven’t always been a bookkeeper. I have previously worked in a variety of business sectors, something I believe has held me in good stead with running Fineline today. In my mid-twenties I ended up working within the recruitment sector for the family business.
“Pull me towards working with numbers”
My previous jobs roles always seemed to pull me towards working with the numbers of the business, usually the hassle of the bookkeeping or paying suppliers somehow fell into my lap……it was something I enjoyed, but never did I contemplate furthering this.
Like the majority of small businesses we were running blind, not really knowing how we were performing one month to the next, success was based on how much money we had in the bank and the annual meeting with the Accountant who would give us figures based on what we had done the previous year, never seemed to really explain where we were heading.
“We were running blind, not really knowing how we were performing”
One of the main frustrations was the job of running the rather large weekly payroll. A job that we outsourced but were always completed wrongly and causes no end of problems with staff being paid incorrectly; we tried different bookkeepers, payroll providers but struggled to find a cost effective, reliable service.
“Payroll was running smoother than ever before”
Taking matters into our own hands, it was decided that I would re-trained in the art… of bookkeeping & payroll, within 3 months of making the decision, the payroll was running smoother than ever before, bookkeeping duties were up to date and clients of the business had even started requesting help with their own payroll & VAT headaches after hearing of our experience.
Seeing an opportunity to be able to provide the same service to others business owners, I broke away from the family business and Fineline bookkeeping was born. I’m pleased to report that Fineline has been growing and helping business owners ever since.
“Fineline has been growing and helping business owners ever since.”
“Helps me understand the pitfalls and worry that running a business can bring”
Since processing that first weekly payroll, the company can now boast of working with 300 local business, Not going the traditional route of going to college/university and studying the world of accounting, I think has allowed me to experience being in business and helps me understand the pitfalls and worry that running a business can bring, everything we do is based on helping business and remembering back to the recruitment days allows me easily to remember the service and experiences that unfortunately thousands of business owners have to induce.
